The Sustainability of B Corps

Devera Team

What is a B Corp?

B Corps are companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab, evaluated across social responsibility, environmental performance, governance, labor practices, and customer relationships. Unlike traditional companies focused solely on profit maximization, B Corps aim to generate positive global impact.

More than just a seal

B Corp certification requires:

  • Ongoing evaluation: Assessment with over 200 impact indicators renewed every three years
  • Legal commitment: Corporate bylaws amended to ensure accountability to all stakeholders, not just shareholders
  • Transparency and continuous improvement: Public certification scores with mandatory progress requirements

Certification represents sustained commitment rather than achieving a single milestone.

New requirements: A more demanding B Corp

B Lab’s 2024 updates raised certification standards, including:

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): Environmental impact evaluation from raw material extraction through end-of-life
  • Climate impact management: Mandatory measurement, reporting, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion: Minimum thresholds for inclusive practices
  • Supply chain traceability: Enhanced oversight of supplier social and environmental practices
  • Purpose-driven governance: Strengthened legal accountability for collective impact

These changes prevent selective performance in one area offsetting weakness elsewhere.

B Corps under scrutiny: Are they really different?

Critics question whether all certified companies genuinely embody claimed values. Notable cases include Nespresso (criticized for single-use capsules and labor concerns) and Danone North America (facing labor dispute criticism).

B Lab responded by tightening standards, eliminating performance offsets and requiring mandatory minimums across all dimensions.

Why B Corps matter for sustainability

B Corps undergo independent audits and standardized evaluations with full transparency. VEJA exemplifies this approach, restructuring its entire supply chain using organic cotton, wild Amazonian rubber, and fair labor practices.

What about greenwashing?

B Corps structurally combat greenwashing through proven, measured, and accountable impact. As Pablo Sanchez, former B Lab Spain director, noted: “The main risk of greenwashing is the disconnect between the story you tell and what you actually do.”

This alignment between narrative and action prevents superficiality.

How to identify a B Corp

  • Look for the “B” seal on products and websites
  • Browse the global directory at bcorporation.net
  • Review publicly available impact scores and reports

In summary

B Corps embed purpose in legal structures, measure real-world impact, and maintain accountability. Supporting them — as consumers, investors, employees, or institutions — advances movement toward a more equitable, regenerative economy.

And at Devera, we believe in this approach too.

Devera ensures informed decisions based on trustworthy climate data, making sustainability accessible, understandable, and actionable. Measurement alone proves insufficient; understanding and action are essential.
